Rugs. All houses have them (almost all anyway) but they are often overlooked. What does it take to make your rug the right rug for your room?
According to designer David Scott, “the number one rule of decorating with area rugs is to purchase the rug with your lifestyle in mind. If you have pets and young kids, be sure to use wool rugs that can clean easily and have some pattern to hide the inevitable signs of life — stains, shedding, hair and spills.”
Let’s start with the color. The colors you choose for your living room will affect how guests feel in the space. Colors can energize or relax the space, depending on how intense they are and how warm or cool they are. A serene scheme of soft blue and white makes this spacious living room feel calm, cool, and collected–a gracious setting for elegant gatherings. A light tan carpet underfoot warms the space and keeps the cool tones in balance.
Look at this rug, ETNA by Brabbu. The smooth color transmits a sense of calm and yet matches the sofa and the trees outside – amazing details that you shouldn’t overlook when decorating your space.
On the other hand, a colourful rug can really bring life and joy to your living room, as this picture perfectly shows.
This one reminds me a bit of the rocks on a lake, which is pretty cool and different from the regular designs – yet it’s easy on the eye and transmits a relaxing energy around the room.
Another thing you should watch out for is size. Designer Celia Berliner suggests making the size of the area rug slightly smaller than the area covered by the furniture. It should be “large enough to anchor and support the gathering space, yet it should free enough flooring around for the circulation flow,” she says. Designer Jennifer Duneier says the size of the area rug depends on the furniture layout. She prefers the front two legs of the sofas or chairs be placed on the area rug.
